Quick Answer
Book your newborn session while you are pregnant — ideally around 30-32 weeks. The actual shoot should happen 5 to 14 days after birth, when babies are naturally sleepier and more easily settled into the gentle, curled poses that make newborn photography so distinctive. A good photographer holds your date flexibly rather than locking in a fixed day, since nobody can predict exactly when a baby will arrive.
Why the 5-14 Day Window Matters
Newborns change fast. In the first two weeks, babies sleep for the majority of the day, their startle reflex is calmer, and they have not yet developed the stronger neck and limb movements that make settled posing harder. After about two weeks, many babies become more alert, feed more actively, and are simply less inclined to stay curled and sleepy for the camera.
This does not mean photography is impossible after two weeks — it just means the session looks and feels different. A 3-week-old session will have more awake, wide-eyed photographs rather than the deeply peaceful, curled poses associated with classic newborn photography.
How to Book When You Don't Know the Exact Due Date
What If Baby Arrives Early or Late?
If baby arrives early, the 5-14 day window still applies — it is measured from the actual birth date, not the due date. If baby is born prematurely or spends time in hospital care, many families choose to wait until baby is home and settled, sometimes photographing at 3-4 weeks instead. There is no rule that says you have missed the window; a flexible photographer will simply adjust the approach.
If baby arrives later than expected, your photographer should already have built buffer time into their schedule rather than treating your original estimated date as fixed.
Our approach: We hold your expected month rather than a single date, and we never rush a session based on a deadline. If your baby needs more time to settle, we wait. Comfort always comes before the clock.
