The South Indian Family's Guide to Maternity Photos at Home
A complete guide to preparing your home, choosing outfits, and planning natural maternity photography — by someone who truly understands your culture.

A Note From Ravi
Congratulations on your pregnancy. As a South Indian family in the UK, you want maternity photos that feel authentic to who you are — not generic studio poses with props that don't reflect your culture or your home.
I created this guide because I know how overwhelming it can feel. When my daughter was born, we booked a photo session and it was nothing like we hoped. The photographer focused on setups, not on her. That experience is the reason Mini Momentz Co. exists.
This guide shares everything I have learned about creating beautiful, natural maternity photos at home — for South Indian families who want something real.
What you will learn: When to book, how to prepare your home for natural light, what to wear (including traditional South Indian attire), poses that feel natural, and exactly what to expect when we arrive.
A quick note
Save this guide and share it with your partner. The best maternity photos happen when everyone is prepared, relaxed, and has stopped trying to look perfect.

When to Book Your Session
The golden window — 28 to 34 weeks
This is the ideal time. Your bump is beautifully rounded and visible, you still have energy for a 2–3 hour session, and you can move comfortably between poses.
- Before 28 weeks — the bump may not be prominent enough
- 28–34 weeks — the golden window. Book here.
- After 36 weeks — fatigue and discomfort can make sessions harder
Our advice: Book your date around 20–22 weeks so your preferred weekend slot is secured. We hold your date until baby arrives with no pressure and full flexibility if anything changes.
Timing around ceremonies
Many families plan around South Indian traditions. Here is how we help:
- Seemantham / Srimantham: Coordinate photos 1–2 weeks before the baby shower
- Family visiting from India: Include parents or grandparents in the session — these multi-generational shots are priceless
- India travel plans: If you are visiting family before the birth, book at 28–30 weeks before you travel
- Religious periods: We work around your calendar completely
Booking tip
Weekend dates book 6–8 weeks in advance. If you are in your second trimester, message us this week to check availability. A 15-minute WhatsApp call is all it takes to plan everything.
Preparing Your Home
You do not need to deep clean. You do not need to redecorate. We only need 2–3 rooms cleared of clutter near where we shoot. That is all.
The best rooms
- Master bedroom — largest windows, morning light, intimate and relaxed
- Living room — space for couple shots, golden afternoon light
- Nursery — even partially decorated, the emotional connection is beautiful
- Kitchen — surprisingly good for lifestyle moments, especially if you love cooking together
Natural light — the only light you need
- Open all blinds and curtains before we arrive
- Turn off all overhead lights — they create mixed colour casts
- North-facing windows give the softest, most consistent light all day
- East-facing rooms are ideal in the morning · West-facing rooms in the afternoon
- White or cream walls act as natural reflectors — they fill shadows beautifully
Best times of day in UK homes:
Morning 9–11am — soft warm light from east-facing rooms
Afternoon 2–4pm — bright but gentle from south or west rooms
Golden hour — magical but brief — have outfits ready in advance
Home prep tip
We will do a quick walk-through when we arrive and find the best light in your home together. You do not need to guess or prepare a specific room. We bring the eye — you bring the space.
What to Wear
For the mother-to-be
What works beautifully:
- Flowing cotton or silk dresses — ankle length shows the bump elegantly
- Solid colours — mustard yellow, deep red, emerald green, dusty sage, blush
- Light silk saree draped over the bump — stunning in natural light
- Fitted top with a flowing skirt — shows shape without feeling tight
What to avoid:
- Busy patterns or large logos — they distract from your face and bump
- Pure black or pure white — difficult to expose well in natural light
- Anything that leaves marks on skin or feels uncomfortable after 30 minutes
For your partner
- Coordinate but do not match exactly
- Solid colour shirt — white, cream, or something that complements your outfit
- Traditional kurta or smart casual both photograph beautifully
- Avoid stripes, checks, or logos
South Indian cultural details
Mangalsutra — wear it. It is part of your story.
Gold bangles — they catch natural light beautifully.
Bindi — keep it simple and elegant.
Jasmine or fresh flowers in hair — a lovely South Indian touch that photographs softly.
Outfit tip
Bring 2–3 outfit options. One traditional and one modern is a popular combination. We can move between looks during the session and you will have wonderful variety in your gallery.
Poses That Feel Natural
We do not force poses. We guide you gently, then step back and let the real moments happen. The way you look at your partner, the way you cradle your bump without thinking — those are the shots we wait for.
The five moments we always capture
- The profile — standing sideways, hands cradling bump. Classic, elegant, timeless.
- The sitting portrait — on the floor or bed, relaxed, hands on bump. Peaceful and intimate.
- The couple's embrace — partner behind you, both hands on bump together. Often the favourite.
- The window light moment — sitting by the window, looking out or at the camera. Soft and dreamy.
- The lifestyle moment — reading a baby book, folding tiny clothes, writing a letter to baby. The photos you will treasure most.
For South Indian families specifically
- With traditional elements — holding a small deity, near a family photo from India, or with a handmade blanket from home
- Including elders — if parents are visiting from India, include them. These multi-generational moments are irreplaceable.
- Relaxed, not posed — talk to each other in Telugu or Tamil. The best expressions happen when you forget we are there.
The most important thing
Do not worry about getting it right. The most beautiful maternity photos are the ones where you forgot the camera was there. We will chat, laugh, and the real you will come through.
